Yes indeed, has been awhile since my last post, unfortunately Ive been battling an evil flu that krept up on me from Hades itself….ah well Im on the mend and will soon be fighting fit. Ok, so last night I was once again given an old school movie treat…this came in the form of Kickboxer starring Jean Claude Van Damme.
Granted, this movie will have most people pulling out their hair, or making a auto channel change, but me….no I appreciate the unrelenting sanity abuse that this movie puts out there. Needless to say millions have been tainted by the now infamous “Van Damme boogie”, its a dance scene so disturbing, so horrific, its scarred countless young children across the globe….personally I see it as a essential desensitizing test, if you can handle Kickboxer, u should be able to handle anything life throws at u.
Kickboxer came out in 1989 (which would have made me 8 years old) and had an all “tar” cast of…hmmm well Van Damme and a couple of relative nobodies….but hey it adds to the charm. Kurt Sloan (JCVD) is the brother and corner man for Eric Sloan (Dennis Alexio….yes him, who? dunno?) who is a bad ass US kick boxing champ. They travel to Thailand to take on the worlds best fighters, in his first match he goes up against the “killing machine don’t stuff around beast” called Tong Po.
Tong Po kicks Eric’s wimp ass all over the place and then breaks his back, he ends up in a wheel chair with no chance of ever walking again, of course Kurt is insanely angry and is introduced to a master Muay thai trainer called Xian. After some convicing Xian agrees to take Kurt on as a student and pretty soon Jean Claude is knocking the s*1t out of the local fighters (whilst dancing badly) and kicking palm trees in half (don’t worry it was a stunt palm and it was blind folded).
I don’t want to give too much away, for those of you who haven’t seen it, but Im sure u will be ENTHRALLED by the mindless entertainment, Kickboxer is not for the weak of spirit…as it crushes the unprepared. This is one of the action flicks that made Van Damme a legend, its great entertainment, especially watching Van Damme who does a odd muay thai, karate mixed fighting style….avid muay thai practitioners will be sick on the spot. Oh and Van Damme also has a ballet dancing background…surprise…dodgy.
