Man I’m kicking back to the slinky grooves from a truly classy offering from local group Pocket change. These muso funksters are onto something here. Combine gentle melodies, upbeat smoking grooves and just a touch of blues along with simply gorgeous vocals and you’re going to find yourself looking for a change.
But they’re no copycats. Pocket change has their own sound and it is wonderfully South African with the complexity lacking by many local artists. These guys give off such a positive vibe it’s difficult not to see them going places, fast. I suppose you know something is truly good when you can’t really put any of it into words. I made several attempts at this but I can’t really describe their music. I guess that’s a good thing…
So who is Pocket change? Brandon Hunt, Voyo Nozaza and Nkule Blose, that’s who. With Brandon on guitar and vocals, Nkule bringing in some east coast hip hop flavour and Vuyo delivering what can only be described as goose bump inducing vocals that creates the perfect combination.
For those of you out there who think you have seen these guys somewhere before, you probably have. All three of these music masterminds earn their keep at Spiga. Get chatting to them and you will see how passionate, friendly and outgoing they are.
Now, to say that I have fallen in love with the music of Pocket change is not the cliché it sounds. I love the vocals, I love their way with words, the music effects me. It has been like having a love affair in the comfort of the eSquared shop. Sounds strange, I know. Basically, anything with ears needs to gives these guys a listen.
