Splashy fen fever

splashy2Rain, mud, long drops, lining up for a shower, hairy hippies and a weekend fuelled with solid choons, yip its Splashy Fen time guys.Yeeehaaaaaa!!!

Splashy is what being young is all about, you throw out all your worries, drink as much as you can, wear the same pair of underwear for 5 whole days and hook up with as many peeps as possible. There is honestly nothing more I could ask for, besides the whole underwear thing.

Splashy fever has hit Durbs in a big way, most conversations inevitably go the way of “dude, are you like heading to splashy hey”.Ofcourse I am,Duh.researching the event its incredible that what started off as a small bunch of peace loving hippies singing along around a camp fire has turned into the monster event it is now. The vibe has changed due to the huge crowd that the event pulls, don’t get me wrong here, things are still super chilled but a more younger commercialised crowd pull in. The sounds of balies singing along to The Eagles has been replaced by the tunes of Kanye West and the boys blaring out of car sound systems.Still, Splashy will always be splashy and that means a good time no matter what.

I have to be honest and admit that last year I did not see one band, I hardly moved away from the campsite, a mistake that I won’t make again! Bands such as Fire through the window, LA Cobra, tree63, Goldfish and the City bowl mizers will be heading up a very impressive line up for this years bash. Be sure to check out the free stage where up and coming talent get the opportunity to strut and strum their way to glory or absolute failure.splashy1

So what do you bring with you to Splashy fen? A good attitude, loads of friends, wellingtons, a years supply of beer, hot dog rolls and a tent.Seriously, that’s all you need for a good time.Do yourself a favour and head up to the event, it will definitely be a weekend full of memories.

last time I was there (think it was in 2000) i ended up covered in mud, brain damaged and hearing impaired…also saw a car catch fire and burn into nothing but a blackened husk.
I believe the eSquared Durban team will be there and flying the flag high…nice one.

PS: take your own bog roll.

HAHHAHA! I was there! No ways Duncan - strange how we lived in Durbs together for so long and kept passing each others like strangers in the night.

    eish.

I saw a guy running around with raw chicken in his pants.

    Damaging stuff that.

I hope it doesn’t rain as per usual at Splashy Fen this year- that time of year it is simply SOAKING! Still - nonetheless - I have ALWAYS had a blast at Splashy.

PLUSPLUSPLUS you never know who is going to be there- one year Black was there - you know - the dude who sang : Everything is coming up Roses.

The cold morning twilight seeps in through my curtains as I wake for a new day. I spread a gap to reveal a long wall of clouds banked up tightly against the watery horizon. The life providing sun illuminates the clouds shining a day glow orange, gaining intensity as it nears its source.

The cool morning breeze blows over my slop covered feet as I walk toward the main road, the buzz and hoot of cars is still a faint sound in the air, but draws nearer with each step. I reach the edge and wait to cross the road. The metal muscled man moving machines buzz past all headed with motor enthusiasm toward their intended destinations. I need a particular kind of this vehicle, one in the form of a minibus, one that will take me toward town. It approaches and complies with a raise of the finger.

The warm city air blows in through the window as we weave our way toward the square edged multiplicity city, Durban. That ever present skyline of buildings that rests there in full view of suburban life. The prospect of entering this city bubble quickly turns to a myriad of life overflowing off the pavements all moving to the soundtrack of many different songs that emerge from shops, taxi’s and motor vehicles. The buildings fling up beside me casting shadows from pavement to pavement leaving thin light, stripes that shine up my world as they pass over my eyes. Activity bubbles over every inch of my vision.

A city can be anything to you but something here definitely conjures up thoughts of love, not to claim superiority to any other place, as things can always be improved. It lives in the ever present buzz of life that flows over and down to the sea. It lives in someone’s smile as they walk across the road, it lives in the fruit vendor’s enthusiasm (and the coke bottles spraying water that make the fruit look like they’ve just been picked from a dewy morning in the Ceres Mountains). It lives. It lives in all these careful and complex occurrences claiming space within the city of Durban. A want for life if viewed with a want for life is here, bursting out at the seams.
