Survivor: Fiji

Run, jump, swim, rant, swear, cry, irritate.
For all of you TV fanatics out there I’m sure you are all well aware that the new series of Survivor started last night on SABC 3.

Survivor for me has always been a bit of a love hate relationship…I love watching people compete against each other and also to see how peoples allegiances shift and as for the hate…well let’s just say these producers can really choose some unlikable people…but hey that’s all for the ratings.
So what’s new and what’s cool with the new Survivor: Fiji?
Let’s take a look shall we.

First off I was surprised that all of the survivors were set adrift together, usually the teams are split from the get go and they head for their various camps.
However this time they all arrived on the same beach and after getting an air dropped message they all started working on one huge luxury shelter.
Why luxury? Well in days gone by survivors usually started with nothing but a machete, but this time they had a huge supply of materials from, pre cut wooden planks, nails, hammers, digging tools….even a frigging toilet seat.
Obviously we and the survivors know that the producers of Survivor are absolute bastards and were waiting for a cruel twist…things were just too easy.
They were right.

For the first challenge the tribe was split into two teams by the person nominated by the survivors who they thought had taken up the role of leader, this honour fell to Sylvia Kwan who works as an architect in the real world and who was instrumental in putting the luxury camp together.
After the two teams were separated (oranges and greens…sorry forget their weird tribe names) they went head to head in a physical and mental challenge that saw them drag two contestants across the Fijian mudflats on wooden “chariots”, they had to reach a number of check points releasing their flags before returning and unscrambling a puzzle that had set of numbers to be used in a combination wheel…if the numbers were used correctly on the combination wheel they found a knife which they then used to cut and release their winning flag.
In the end the green team walked away with the win…and what a win it was.
It was neck and neck at some points of the race and it was difficult to see who would slip up first…the orange team stuffed up a bit with the flag capturing and then took too long on the puzzle scrambling.

Now came the fun part, the losing team had to survivorchariotsrelocate to an entirely new beach where all they has was a water well and a machete…and yes the winning team got the awesome camp that they all worked hard for two days to build HAHAHA….hilarious.
Unfortunately for our resident architect, she had to become part of the losing team when she returns from Exile island…yes, that’s where she was sent for being the leader…bummer hey…she had to sit through the night surrounded by hundreds of “deadly” sea snakes.
She had a chance to see the hint for finding the first immunity idol, but it seems that it’s back at base camp somewhere…that’s gonna be interesting too.

As you can imagine there was some seriously miffed orange team members, but when they got to their new camp they were for the most part very positive, which is exactly what they need right now if they are going to bounce back.
The crappy task of choosing the first person to be voted out came as a shock to poor Jessica De Ben who thought that she had contributed greatly to the Survivor cause…however she was one of the girls that took too long on the puzzle and she got a three vote knockout…poor chic.
The allegiances still seem pretty flimsy and there looks to be more than one snake in the grass this time…next week’s episode is gonna be great and I think people are going to start to crack early.

Which characters do I like so far…..shooo well I dig Rocky who is a no nonsense Bar Tender and the awesome old guy called Yau-Man who grew up in Borneo…he’s undoubtedly gonna be an asset to his team…even if he is quite frail.
So far I don’t have too many reservations about the other survivors, however the motor mouth dude called Dreamz gets up my nose in a big way…he just can’t shut up and I think I would have strangled him to death on the first night ;)

This is gonna be a fun one I can just feel it, the fur will start flying real soon.
Oh, and please if you know the outcome of this one, keep it to yourself…spoilers suck.

Duncs.

They’re in really beautiful surroundings, but the snakes makes it super scary and it’s real, not just like the previous ones where they mention the DANGEROUS animals on these islands and you never spot one… so I suppose it’s gonna be kinda interesting!
