After finishing work late you end up wandering down a dark street on your way home.
The moon is blocked by menacing clouds…the street is deserted and has an eerie calm about it.
When suddenly there is a rustling in the bushes to your left and the right a low inhuman moaning follows and then a banshee like screech.
Panic stricken, you begin to run, faster and faster, but there is no escape from the speed of your attackers…you look over your shoulders just in time to see the glowing eyes and the frothing maws of the possessed predators as they close in…
Yeah sounds like something out of a horror movie right?
Well ok so maybe I have embellished just a tad on this one, but the attackers are something quite different than what you were probably imagining.
Nope they were not swift moving undead, or savage vampires….but cats….yes that’s right, cats.
While we here in South Africa have to worry about hijackers and taxi violence, the people of Belgrade in Serbia have something completely different to contend with and that is legions of cats with rabies.
I thought it was a joke until I found an article on News24, apparently Serbia has a huge epidemic of felines infected with the terrible disease, to the extent that a “rabies warning” has been issued for the small town of Raca Kragujevacka.
Apparently several cats had gone on a rampage biting and scratching citizens…including two pre-school children….sheesh this is insane.
Apparently rabies was only confirmed in one of the cats, which is surprising considering there was so many attacks…the one cat had rabies and was obviously “out of sorts” enough to attack a human…but what were the other cat’s excuses?
Did they get talked into it by the crazy cat ringleader or was there something more…where is Dr. Doolittle when you need him.
I guess the Serbian police are going to have to train a crack team of cat whisperers for any future cases of cat mayhem.
Gotta say this one really made me do a double take…I guess when you think about Europe you get the impression that they are civilized and have good social systems…I guess Eastern Europe falls into a different category.
So if for whatever reason you decide that you would rather not go on holiday to the Bahamas and rather go wandering the Serbian country side, please beware and wear running shoes.
Just so you know, rabies is carried in the saliva of infected animals and kills 50000 people around the world annually and is lethal unless immediately treated.
