Hey guys
South Park, still and will, I’m sure captivate a demographic of sick and twisted folk who enjoy revelling in those awkward, cringing social bloopers that affect us all. Saying that I have to say I LOVE South Park and think Matt Stone and Tray Parker deserve a little more than just the average Emmy. I’m thinking along the lines of a Noble Prize for conglomerated Cultural introspection? Saying that I’ll quickly move on before I really let loose on the bs.
South Park Fashion I’m sure is one of the subtle undertows that Matt and Trey use to convey meaning and understanding of culture to the average Joe. The focus of this blog is the fashion sense or lack thereof pertaining to our loveable characters Kyle, Eric, Stan and Kenny. Its’ all a matter of opinion, man!! Granted, most of the time our animated friends wear exactly the same gear but there is the odd encounter with a sophisticated and well mannered Eric Cartman or a dark and attitude laced ‘punkie’ Butters. The boys stay in South Park, a town that’s supposed to be modelled on a Colorado town in the late 1800’s, and gets rather chilli so they’re warmly dressed in their winter woollies pretty much all the time.
We’ll start with Stan; Stan’s a pretty mellow guy that finds speaking to the love of his life incredibly stressful, hence the projectile puke. He’s always wearing a Bennie, a blue one with a red pom-pom on the top to be exact and is never seen without his gloves or his beanie and quite frankly wouldn’t be Stan without them.
Kenny on the other is the ‘quite’ recluse. Actually not so much the quite one but more of a muffled background voice because his Parka is always covering his face. Kenny’s always being ripped on for being the ‘poor dude’ by Cartman, let’s just say that Kenny‘s the practical kid who doesn’t need a wardrobe of different coloured Parka’s to make himself feel worthwhile. He’s got the one and that’s cool-beans with him!
Eric, or reincarnated Adolf, is the twisted, unremorseful, sick puppy who takes great pleasure in harassing his fellow class mates. Eric’s Ninety percent of the time dressed in his red coat and matching beanie, but there are many an instance when he’s specifically given cute, cuddly, (better yet) disarming pullovers of little bears and flowers on the front.
South park fashion is a subject of no consequence to the general public but then again the show could be lumped into the same category as well. I think that fashion in the show is used as a tool to try understand characters and to fathom meaning using the little knowledge that is bestowed upon us by the creators. Yes we know they live in a godforsaken little town that’s always cold. But what does it mean when characters are given traits that are affected by the clothing they wear? Kenny and his Parka? Eric and his cuddly teddy pullover? Maybe I ask too many questions!?
Would love to hear your opinion!
Alex

Yeah I’m picking up what you are putting down Alex.
In order to highlight a particular character trait through the use of clothing can be quite difficult. Cartoons are a medium that may even simplify the process of categorizing individuals, especially in South Park which has been constructed in an overly simplistic manner.
I love South PArk very much, bizarre stories and insane characters are right up my alley
