Outlawing Graffiti

Graf1

Howdy all,

I stumbled across a minute article entitled ‘Is graffiti a public nuisance?’  by Lindsay Dentlinger. As you can tell by the title it seems to be quite a sore point for the local authorities as they try to pass a bylaw that will prohibit and enforce removal and restoration of affected surfaces. This as I’m sure you will agree with me will seriously suffocate and squash a community that is only beginning to flourish.

Granted not all graffiti is to everyone’s taste, but expression in any form is yet a taste of creation and borders on godliness in my opinion! Instead of outlawing graffiti maybe the City of Cape Town could take a more positive and passive approach and donate more to the graffiti community in the form of so called ‘approved graffiti spaces.’

The proposed bylaw declares that any form of graffiti within the city’s jurisdiction is a nuisance and subject to removal. If the artist in question is identified and found guilty he or she could be subjected to a fine of up to R20 000. This is crazy!! A valid art form is being denied existence by the powers that be for no better reason other than they don’t understand or appreciate this form of expression.  This law has not been passed yet and quite frankly should not be passed. The City of Cape Town has given the public till the 20 August for all to announce their views and opinions on the bylaw. Therefore, now is the time to act!!

Unfortunately there is no forum or digital petition online and as soon as I know how to rally against this agressvie manoeuvre on the City of Cape Town’s part, I’ll let you know.

Hi Springleaper’s

What’s cooking I hear you demand?  Well I’ve been thinking, it doesn’t happen very often, and I wandered why hasn’t anyone famous been caught wearing an awesome springleap.com creation? I came to two conclusions. Firstly, the most obvious one, because no one famous has seen any of our amazing tshirt’s and secondly, well I didn’t get that far. But come on, these so called fashion junkies that celebrities claim to be should have heard of and maxed out their credit cards at the coolest spot for tees ages ago, seems like everyone else has!

The site is a blog spot for all weird and wonderful tee designs that the bloggers in general could find on other sites as well as a range of ideas for tees that have been submitted to their site. They give little opinion and a link to the tee in question. All in all a fun site that’s perpetuating awesome tee design, illustration and yes eventual consumption. Hehe.

Zombies2

Greetings everyone,

As I’m writing this I feel an impulsive, life changing urge to eat the flesh off your bones. Sorry lost track of where I was. Seeing as I’m in the mood for flesh let me introduce you to my topic for this fabulous Wednesday. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a huge fan of the Zombie culture that seems to float around the world and rears its rotten, hungry head from time to time as well.  Although the undead have quite literally been floating around for ages the first written record of a zombie as we know today according to Time magazine was referenced by W.B. Seabrook in The Magic Island (1929). Nothing as gory and explicit as today, but a start to an awesome mythical character that has entertained and fuelled a small but steadily growing culture the world over. Cotton On t-shirt controversy

Cotton On

Greetings everybody.

There seems to be a bit of a rumble to the south as far as t-shirt design goes. Some of you may have heard of the endless stream of complaints t-shirt company Cotton On has received after it released a range of sexually suggestive children’s t-shirts. I thought it would be interesting to see what our own t-shirt design community thought of these slogan designs. Do you think it’s over the top, or simply a waste of a conversation?

Cotton On is a well known Australian clothing manufacturer, who up until now, has made relatively small waves in the t-shirt designs community. I guess all it takes is a little bit of controversy to throw yourself into the lime light. While some marketing guru’s reckon there is no such thing as bad publicity, I think that this episode could very well shatter that belief.
