Undead

vampires zombies ghosts

Hi there spooks & ghouls.

In my last posting I mentioned that our new Springleap.com theme was The Living Dead. Now, as I mentioned the word undead implies to a whole host of creatures and spirits.
I thought I may as well chat about some of the undead that will be easiest for artists to use as base material for the competition.

Arguably the most famous types of undead are either vampires or zombies. However, I will have to say vampires, because in the literary sense the word “undead” was first used when talking about vampires by Bram Stoker. Anybody who calls themselves a vampire fan will undoubtedly respect Bram Stokers Dracula as the epitome of classic vampire. In recent years the vampire has undergone quite a few changes. Some have been transformed into truly “ugly” looking beings, such as the ones from 30 Days of Night, which is similar to the older Count Orlock. On the flip side the watered down vampires whose skin sparkles in the sun, such as the ones from Twilight.
If you guys & girls are looking for good design idea food in regards to vampires, here is a nice list of vampires to Google:
Bram Stokers Dracula.
Interview with the Vampire.
30 Days of Night.
Nosferatu.

Next up we have the zombie, which is also an extremely popular symbol of horror subculture.  As far as zombies go perhaps the most famous is Night of the Living Dead. The movie itself was released in the 60’s, but it was by no means the very first zombie movie. However with that said the idea of zombie has been around for many many years. Consider even Frankenstein, who was a dead man brought back to life through the power of science…it is without doubt one of the most original ideas for a zombie. Of course science has been used many times in contemporary horror movie like Resident Evil and 28 Days Later. However I will always consider a zombie an individual brought back from the grave by the forces of darkness.
There is no doubt that zombies will be high on the “design idea list” for The Living Dead theme competition.
Here are a few ideas for Google:
Night of the living dead.
Zombieland.
Resident Evil.
Dungeons & Dragons (search for zombie D&D)
Frankenstein.

While ghosts may not be on the list of most prominent undead, there is no denying its importance. Ghosts, spirits & spectres of any kind are indeed beings that exhibit signs of having once lived, but unable to proceed to the afterlife. While their bodies are insubstantial, I still consider them undead. Ghosts have been haunting the living since time began. I honestly don’t think I need to give you ideas about these spooky fellows. Dude, you can use anything from Casper to Exorcist. They all have equal levels of awesome undead might.
It’s been a long time since I have seen a really original ghost movie. Perhaps the last Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) or perhaps 13 Ghosts (2001). I would love to see something truly original come out in this genre soon….maybe you designers can invoke something different ne?

There are so many cool ideas for The Living Dead. I hope to see a bombardment of undead design submissions coming through. This is such a fun design theme and really suits the Halloween month of October….you minds should be racing with fiendish ideas muhahaha J

Laters.

Duncs.
