Hi there comic lovers.
Don’t you just wish there were more South Africans making high quality graphic novels with unique and interesting storyline….never gonna happen? THINK AGAIN.
Enter Salem Brownstone. This exquisitely drawn graphic novel by Nikhil Singh just goes to show that we should never sell our South African artists short. No way no how!
Truth to tell the first time I heard about the amazing art of Nikhil Singh was through his cousin, who works at Springleap.com…none other than Mehul. It was funny because I had already seen Nikhil’s illustration and fallen in love with it. When we put 2 and 2 together I felt like such a n00b. I guess that is a problem with some artists…you remember every bit of their style, but their name eludes you…dammit.
The writer of Salem Brownstone goes by the name John Harris Dunning. I’m not sure, but I think that he is also originally South African. That means we have a seriously powerful team of Saffa creative energy. Of course If John is not from SA, my apologies. I just can’t seem to find his bio anywhere online
Salem Brownstone is about a young man who is left a dark and scary mansion by his deceased father.
While it may seem like a blessing receiving money and a big ass house, there is one problem. His father seemed to be mixed up with some rather powerful magical enemies. These creatures will likely make his life very painful if they get their hands (or claws) on him. Eish, scary stuff. Salem is thrown into the deep end of serious danger against an enemy he does not fully understand. Its sink or swim time for this rather hapless fellow. Salem is forced to seek help from the bizarre Circus of Unearthly Delights, run by Dr Kinoshita. What will happen to Salem? Will he be able to adapt to his new life, will he be able to survive his dead father’s demons? Things most certainly don’t look good.
I’m super proud that a South African designer has made a graphic novel of this level. I wanna send a BIG shout out to Nikhil Singh and John Harris Dunning. Well done!
Comic mega legend Alan Moore said that Salem Brownstone is, “a wonderfully imaginative and stylish piece of work and a perfect example of the adventurous new directions that comic books should be taking in the future.”
Holy Cow! That is a serious compliment coming from a man who is a gargantuan force in the comic world. High praise indeed!
I can’t wait to see what heights Salem Brownstone can climb to. I hope that it shoots Nikhil Singh and John Harris Dunning to new level of popularity.
D.
