Greetings traveller.
Swinging from a rope above a sprawling bazaar, his trusty dagger in hand, as he escapes from the Sultans ruthless soldiers. Who else could I be talking about? Aladdin of course!
The age old children’s tale is back…although this time it’s definitely not for the kids.
Radical Comics has released a seriously macabre version of the Aladdin that most of us know and love.
Aladdin is raised in a brothel after his mother dies. In this dark environment new Aladdin learns about the ugliness of the underworld and the evils men are capable of. In this darker version of Shambhalla, Aladdin grows into a venomous young man who uses his cunning and deep insight into human nature to meet his own ends. He is a far cry from the big eyed, sweet Disney version that most of us visualize. This new Aladdin is no nice dude!
In this version of new Aladdin, our hero has a secret birthright that he does not even know about. Running through his veins is mystical blood, which is the key to obtaining the powerful entity called the Djinn (genie if you will). The evil sorcerer Qassim knows of his power and seeks to use him in order to gain the power for himself.
I’m very interested to read Radical Comics interpretation of the classic. Because of the heavy nature of this Aladdin, we have no idea of the possible outcome. This Aladdin may just end up dying before the end and see Princess Jasmine marry the evil wizard. LOL anything is possible. Perhaps that is what is so thrilling about this latest dark version, the uncertainty of the “hero”.
The writer of this new darker Aladdin is Ian Edginton, who is backed up by some seriously stunning artwork by Stjepan Sejic. The amalgamation of great art and unique storyline direction is sure to be a winning combination. Hopefully the new Aladdin will be out in South African comic stores before Xmas.
Best of all there doesn’t seem to be an Abu in sight ROFL. And if an Abu does emerge, I have no doubts it will be a savage little fiend that goes straight for the eyes.
Eish, reality ye is a heartless wench!
D.
PS: It seems Aladdin’s right hand man and buddy in this version is the badass sea traversing adventurer Sinbad…who also seems to have a few mental issues to correct.
This is gonna be awesome!
