Local design, where is it headed?
While this question may be extremely difficult to answer, especially with our current economic meltdown, I’d like to think that we are still rocking the design world.
I find that a very insightful look into the state of our local design world, is best viewed through Springleap.com
If you want to see who the up and coming talent is in SA, look no further!
While on the negative side, we hear of designers flocking overseas for jobs that pay them what they truly deserve. However, we hear about just as many heading back to South Africa, when they realize things aren’t much better there.
Springleap.com is an international t-shirt design competition, which not only features the best in upcoming South African design talent, but also the design might of international artists.
Springleap acts as a looking glass into the battle between local and international design…however, with a credo of fellowship and appreciation of art.
Obviously I’m in the corner of local designers! I’d be a damn turncoat if I wasn’t right LOL.
I have the belief that South African art has just as much potential as any other country on Earth. We have a unique perspective on art, coming from a richly diverse nation, which is in itself a melting pot of cultures. Africa has unrivalled rhythm and soul, which is feeling we can express not only through dance, but through our art as well.
I have my select favourite when it comes to local design. On Springleap.com my favourites usually always circle back to TokyoGoGo and Tu. Both of these designers really rock my world!
But then there are peeps like DustyRich, who just keeps on surprising me, by taking his design to a whole new level. Every time he submits something new, I’m like “WOW”!
Another designer that needs a mention is CHUCKY who has just won another Springlep.com competition. He is def an artist to keep your eyes on!
The battle will continue between our local designers and the international design crowd. I feel that the tide will slowly turn in our favour as the years go by. Maybe the international designers will decide to move over here to take their art to a new plateau. Now that, is something I would like to see.
Who is top of the pops on your local design chart?
Duncs.
