Giant bugs, flesh eating tree dwellers and a good helping of monkey-cat humanoids. Avatar was all this and more! James Cameron, thank you for bringing the world of Avatar to life. Indeed only you could have been able to pull off such an ambitious movie and still make it work on so many levels.
After having to wait almost a month in order to round up my friends and purchase tickets for the 3D event of 2009, we eventually watched a movie that is reshaping the way we view entertainment on the big screen.
Avatar: well worth the wait.
Quite a few months back I wrote a blog about an upcoming sci-fi fantasy movie Avatar. It was rumoured to be a movie that would change our lives in regards to CGI and scale. On most points I have to say the movie delivered. There were a few “dodgy” points that I feel tarnished my experience…but these were indeed minimal.
3D movies have most certainly come a long way. From the days of funny red and blue 3D glasses, things have evolved into a production process that rivals the NASA space programme. There is no doubting the wizardry involved in making a modern day 3D movie, I was suitably astounded at how far things have progressed since movies like Jurassic Park, first graced South Africans with the world of 3D cinema.
To begin I donned my Real D 3D glasses…which are simple black glasses that make you look like a secret agent Steve Erkle LOL. It took me about 10 minutes to get my eyes used to looking at the screen through glasses…freaked me out a little. But after I adjusted to my four-eyes, I was off and away on one of the most entertaining movies of my life.
Particles of dust drift past your eyes, vid-screens so vibrant that you want to reach out and push some buttons, foliage that twines around trees, giving depth never dreamed of.
If you have not had the new 3D movie experience, you are in for a shock to the system.
Basically in a nut shell Real D 3D technology uses the human eyes own qualities of perception to bring the illusion of 3D to life. When the movie is shot, it is done so with 2 cameras. Each camera represents one human eye, thus combining to give you the duality which creates Real D 3D. Absolutely stunning stuff!
If you are confused don’t stress, this is some pretty high-tech stuff we are jabbering on about.
The Real D 3D glasses are specially made to take full advantage of the technology that is only the first step in a tech that I have no doubt will begin to rock the foundations of modern day entertainment.
So whats next? There are a whole host of movies that are in the works or awaiting release, set to blow our minds in 3D. Perhaps my most anticipated movie is the new Alice in Wonderland 3D.
Wow, it’s going to be an insanely hot movie. Just imagine the “rabbit hole” effect you will experience in an completely twisted fantasy world!
Also, the new Toy Story 3 is going to be madly funny and brilliant in 3D. Woody and Buzz on their insane antics, popping out the screen and making you bust a gut, all at the same time…..yep, it’s going to rock!
If you have as yet not gone to watch Avatar in 3D, make a plan and go see it. Just make sure you book in advance…it’s always bloody sold out ![]()
Even if you think you hate fantasy movies, this will change your perspective on a lot of things.
Avatar also has a very strong eco-awareness message, which I feel is pertinent to our lives at the moment.
GOGOGOGO, do Real D 3D!!!!
Duncs.
