Fuco Ueda

Fuco Ueda

Greetings one and all.

It’s been quite some time since I did a showcase on an artist. However, I thought I’d ring in the New Year with a Japanese artist that has a style as beautiful as any of the best I’ve seen in my life.
Thanks to lauren for putting me on to this simply jaw dropping designer!
Enter the whimsical world of Fuco Ueda

While at times I find that surrealist painting can be a touch on the “intense” side, in a way that it makes the artwork difficult to identify with, Fuco Ueda manages to capture your imagination and drive you to ponder her designs for hours on end.

Fuco Ueda also seems to have a very strong disposition towards women and nature. All of her designs are, literally, swimming with aquatic animals and various other creatures. I find that her style which makes use of her acrylic medium adds a softness that makes you feel as if you are constantly looking through water, or perhaps in true surrealist fashion, are having your perception augmented in order to achieve a particular effect.

Most recently it seems that she has been enraptured by sea life, which permeates her work strongly…I can almost taste the sea salt when I look at these fabulously fishy designs.
I have added three of my favourite designs from her more recent work in my blog picture. The morey eel painting speaks to me the most. But what does it mean? An eel wrapped around a hanging light, what kind of connection can we make? For me personally the painting speaks of the close relation between humanity and animals. The eel appears almost translucent when it is near to the light, but where it is swimming away it become more tangible. In essence, humanity does not see nature’s true beauty. We are blinded by our material man-made things and forget about the beauty around us. There is an even greater level of separation from humanity, because Fuco Ueda uses an inanimate object, instead of a human form. I feel this particular design has a powerful  eco-awareness message…important for our current age!

As you can see from my ramblings above, it’s possible to consider these designs at length. I may not be right in my interpretation, however sometimes art needs to serve merely as a catalyst for thought.
