An interesting aspect to Springleap.com’s competition is what designs people most generally gravitate towards.
That is what design are most popular and what will, in the greater scheme, sell well to the general public.
I find that this community seems to form small factions, which each having their own specific design styles.
I myself fall into a category that likes the more intricate or cartoon oriented designs.
What group do you fit into?
Whenever I vote for a new batch of Springleap.com design, I always find myself loving anything that has a cartoon design with a unique character.
Its not very often that I get impressed by these design that simply chuck together a few randomly chosen fonts and common vector images. Gross, even a monkey could come up with these sorts of designs. For me personally, design styles that appear on Springleap.com should be created from scratch. Meaning that you sit down and sketch your design first and then import it into Illustrator or PS. From there you can take it to the next level with colour and line density….whatever.
Once said to be the most powerful weapon in two universes…well at least comic universes, the Green lantern Power Ring has become more iconic than some super heroes will ever be. It’s never been a surprise why the Green Lantern comic book has always been a huge draw for the massive DC Comics universe.
Indeed the Green lantern is one of the few DC characters that runs around randomly across the known universe as he pleases, unlike most other superheroes who stick to their own cities.
Yep, Green lantern sure does get around. His most recent accomplishment is receiving the nod for his very own live action Green Lantern movie. Nice one Hal!
I must admit I seem to have had my blinkers on. Usually I’m pretty clued up when it comes to the mass of comic book movies that are out or impending, but Green lantern seems to have been one that flew under my radar. In most cases I’d even be upset, but in this case I’m pretty freaking stoked. When a movie that I’m truly looking forward to is in production and the trailers eventually start flying out, I do my best to avoid them in order to keep a bit of the mystery.
For the most part I’m pretty excited, but to tell the truth the lead role which will be played by Ryan Reynolds, has me slightly worried to say the least.
Yep, I see potential in such abundance that it makes me smile from ear to ear.
In my previousblog I mentioned that there had been many submissions for the Down The Rabbit Hole theme competition. Not only were there lots of submissions, many of them had true design potential.
Out of the multitude of amazing up and coming design I have picked 3 that I feel should be given praise.
It’s not easy to simply single out 3 people above the rest, please understand that I truly sifted and weighed my options. All three were chosen for different reasons and spoke to me on different levels.
My first design choice comes from Stashme with her colourful and intricate design Belinda in Alice Land.
Just looking at this design raises my spirits! Every single one of her characters seems so unique and full of life. Its attention to detail that seems to be Stashme’s greatest strength. Well perhaps not the only strength. Just look at the vibrant colour and fine choice of t-shirt colour. I think that this design is overall powerfully executed artwork. Heck, Stashme has received positive comment after positive comment. We may even find that she could have a potential win on her hands. About the only drawback that can be found with this design is its overall length…it seems that it has been elongated too much and that if there was a way to compress the elements slightly and perhaps centre said elements, it would be a design of serious calibre.
This is why I consider this piece a good representation of design potential. All of the energy is there. It just needs a tad more focus. Boys and girls watch this space for more of Stashme’s brilliant design power. We could see a win from this artist very soon!
One thing that our most recent Springleap.comtheme competition did have was an abundance of design potential. Down The rabbit Hole had the most submissions I have seen in ages. Designers really took this theme and ran with it! I suppose people associated with the theme more than our past design competitions.
The big question is why? Where does this “design association” stem from?
The overwhelming popularity of the Down The Rabbit Hole theme competition most certainly reflects what the Springleap.com artists want from our theme format. While in the past some of our competitions have not had quite the popularity we thought they would. The Hard of Rock was one competition that I was a tad disappointed with. While I’m absolutely in love with Suburbanhijinx’s winning design STAYIN ALIVE, I felt that he did not have to try super hard to take the win. However I did not sulk, I suppose it’s mostly because I love the winning design so much. If it had been a dog show and some cruddy design had snuck away with the win, I probably would have gotten all “rock star” and thrown a chair at a group of passersby (beware my wrath).
Could it be that there was stronger design association because designers were bored of the past them competition ideas? I know quite a few people were quite uninterested in the original Football Fever competition, because of all the World Cup hype that is going on at the moment. Here we have a situation where design association is affected by an outside influence that has very little to do with our own competition selection. In my opinion people should be fired up for the World Cup and have a bazillion ideas, that are soccer related. I suppose it’s difficult to take an interest in a theme that you are bombarded by perpetually every single day.
