Simple vs Intricate

An interesting aspect to Springleap.com’s competition is what designs people most generally gravitate towards.
That is what design are most popular and what will, in the greater scheme, sell well to the general public.
I find that this community seems to form small factions, which each having their own specific design styles.
I myself fall into a category that likes the more intricate or cartoon oriented designs.
What group do you fit into?

Whenever I vote for a new batch of Springleap.com design, I always find myself loving anything that has a cartoon design with a unique character.
Its not very often that I get impressed by these design that simply chuck together a few randomly chosen fonts and common vector images. Gross, even a monkey could come up with these sorts of designs. For me personally, design styles that appear on Springleap.com should be created from scratch. Meaning that you sit down and sketch your design first and then import it into Illustrator or PS. From there you can take it to the next level with colour and line density….whatever.

There are often simple styled designs that draw lots of attention from the voters and I must admit I get slightly miffed. Which I know is ultimately not cool on my part, because the fact that a designer has tried and actually submitted an entry is what it should be about. Springleap.com is not just about insanely powerful designers coming together with a force so intimidating that no upcoming designers dare approach. No ways, we want the undiscovered talent to give it a try. Plus they will hopefully receive lots of helpful feedback for their future work and learn how to be even better designers.

Design styles vary so much and it’s difficult to pinpoint which design will sell well in the store. Of course the online design community is a pretty good barometer of what designs will do well, however we have had some designs in store that raised very little interest from the public. Perhaps designers view designs differently to the rest of the world. We know how much effort goes into a design and the level of original creativity. Sometimes I think that the general public doesn’t appreciate what our designers go through in order to create a winning piece.

What design styles attract you? Do you like the intricate work, or prefer a simple but meaningful design?
I’d love to know what design category you feel your tastes fall under.

Duncs.
