The Grammy Awards 2010 have come and gone…all that is left is the dull thud of its memory, not unlike the feeling after a heavy night of drinking. The glitz and sparkly nature of these events is probably what I like the least. However I do enjoy the Grammies for a handful of awards that interest me personally. Yup, I’m only interested in probably 5% of what ever goes on at the Grammy Awards, which is why I never watch the awards and rather wait until the results are placed neatly on a web page.
Here are the Grammy rock winners.
First off a mention must go out to Beyonce for her record setting 6 award haul. This is the most awards ever given to a female artist in one ceremony. Very impressive indeed!
I’m not a fan of her music, well besides for the South African Vodacom advert that used one of her songs, but I think we can all recognize the achievement. Congrats!
Ok, now onto the awards that I actually enjoy *drum roll* it’s the Grammy rock winners!
Best Rock Song:
Kings Of Leon
Use Somebody (Caleb Followill, Jared Followill, Matthew Followill & Nathan Followill, songwriters)
Best rock song eh? Well if you say so Mr. Grammy man. This is one seriously popular song, even though in my opinion KOL’s Sex on Fire is waaaay better. I’m pretty happy with this choice, the closest competitors that I enjoyed were Green Day with 21 Guns and Pearl jam’s The Fixer.
Well done to the Followill crew!
Best Rock Album:
Green Day
21st Century Breakdown
Shoooo, a band that shaped the music I listened to when I was a young teenager are still doing wonders for the world of rock. While their music may have taken a slightly different slant these past few years, I still really appreciate their music and unique sound. To be able to steal this one away from rock legends U2 is a really powerful accomplishment. Strangely I feel as if Green Day and U2 are very similar and in many ways I feel that Green Day could very well become the U2 of our generation….although they are not there yet, not even close.
Best Rock Performance by A Duo Or Group With Vocals:
Kings Of Leon
Use Somebody
Yep, it’s these boys again. Face it, you either love this bands sound, or you despise it. Truthfully I know quite a few rock fans who vow blood against anyone who enjoys The Kings Of Leon. Personally I enjoy this family’s music and can appreciate their colourful past and accomplishments. I say, “YAY”!
Best Hard Rock Performance:
AC/DC
War Machine
While AC/DC is best known for Thunder Struck from days of old, it seems that it’s not impossible to teach old dogs new tricks. Aussie hard rock legend band AC/DC has been awful quiet for as long as I can remember, so I was a touch surprised that they were nominated. Look I love AC/DC lots and lots like jelly-tots, but I really thought Metallica would be the victors in this battle. Oh well, you win some, you lose some!
Best Metal Performance:
Judas Priest
Dissident Aggressor
Track from: A Touch Of Evil – Live
Can you believe it? After all these years Judas Priest is still making their influence felt. Even though you would expect them rather to be up for a “lifetime achievement award”, they instead went toe to toe with Metal muscle like Lamb of God (who were my favourite of this lot) and thrash metal kings Slayer.
With a career spanning from their inception back in 69, there is no telling how high and how far these guys will fly.
Well I guess it’s now time to wait and see what happens this year in the rock music world. Blink 182 releases a new album and Foo Fighters are supposedly back with a new studio album…so it could be very interesting indeed. Who knows what the Grammy rock winners will be next year?
D.
