Are you ready to rock?
For the most part our South African rock festivals are still considered fledgling in size compared to that of international levels. There is one particular hard rock music festival in England that I feel is my duty to comment on every year and that is the Download Festival.
The line up has already started appearing on their main page and lemme tell you it’s going to be HUGE!
Seriously there is nothing quite like the Download festival experience. When I was lucky enough to attend back in 2006 I got to experience international mega acts like Metallica, Tool, Prodigy and Guns N’ Roses….to name a few.
It seems that this year’s Download 2010 line up will be even amazing than back in 06. With a stunning line up featuring bands like Deftones, Them Crooked Vultures and Aerosmith, we can be assured of a festival that will go down as one of the best ever.
Perhaps this blog is a bit of a painful one, after all we are all stuck down here in South Africa and will in most cases have no chance of getting anywhere near Download 2010. However there are certainly a select few who will be lucky enough to go across. If I was earning mega bucks and was an expensive person it would be on the top of my annual pilgrimage list. Once you go to a hard rock concert like this there is no coming back to normality. While we have the Cokefest over here once a year, it is a comparative drop in the proverbial ocean. We truly need to host more events that will bring the big international bands across to our sunny shores. Perhaps now that we have so many deluxe beautiful stadiums built for the World Cup, we will be able to host some big acts…although we will have to wait and see.
Personally I feel that as a country we still need to do a whole lot more growing before we can be on the same level as the 1st world countries. It’s not like we are not passionate about music, but we need to get people interested in coming to festivals and forking out cash for big names…which as we all know is easier said than done, especially if you don’t have much money coming in. We have a fair distance to go, but I feel positive that we will get there.
Download 2010 has a list of bands that seriously makes your eyes water. Here is the LINK to the full list of bands that have been announced. There will be more to come as the event draws near.
The selected acts, as you will see, are actually a well balanced mix of old (Billy Idol), new (Them Crooked Vultures) and acts that are already very well established (Rage Against the Machine).
Shooo I’m seriously considering selling my body for a ticket to this major hard rock festival.
For those of you lucky enough to get across to Download 2010, you make me sick…..well with jealousy of course
