Hi there one and all.
While we may still be basking in the sun and hitting the beach most weekends, I feel that it’s almost time to start realizing the truth. Winter is on its way…and in a mega hurry. Perhaps it’s because I’m living down in Cape Town close to the water, but we are already feeling the cold pinch in the evenings now. Gone are the days of traipsing around in baggies and slops, it’s almost time to whip that comfy armour out of the closet. Bring on the hoodies….well, the surfer hoodies in 2010 I mean!
Now of course the question is what hoodies should you go for this season? Well, it’s kind of a toss-up for the best of the best. It has been a long time since my wardrobe consisted of only surfer gear, but I overall prefer surfer style hoodies to the rest of the more fab-fab metro-male styles. As far as surfer hoodies in 2010 go I have stuck to my two favourites, which are perhaps pretty commercial labels, but hey I like their stuff.
These labels are of course Quiksilver and Billabong!
My top selection for Billabong hoodies are the Elect and Hydro jumper styles.
The Elect has that “lumberjack” print that has become so popular again. While in truth I am waaaay over the checked print style, I have come to like the Elect because of its faded white & black coordination. The check pattern itself has a sketchy quality that makes it look like it was scrawled roughly with a pencil. I must say it gives it a very nice effect indeed. The fact that this is the first checked design I have liked in….well since Kurt Cobain died, is saying something.
The Hydro jumper is more my typical choice of hoodie. It has a slick material, with clean lines and an almost futuristic vibe. This design may look a touch “simple”, but what it lacks in elaborate print design is more than made up in good clean lines. I tried to find out the actual price, but annoyingly the Hydro jumper wasn’t even on their system….not cool. However I’m gonna just cross my fingers and hope that I can find one of these guys…it’s definitely the hoodie for me.
As far as Quiksilver goes I only found one hoodie worth mentioning, truth to tell there seemed to be only 1 haha…how is that possible? Well perhaps it an out of season item for the moment. I saw on the South African Quiksilver website absolutely no mention of hoodies/sweaters/jackets which I suppose is because we are still technically in Winter hahaha.
Anyway the hoodie I did find is called Benitez and in actual fact is pretty cool…or warm, depending on how you look at it hehe. This hoodie may be a tad simple looking, but I must say I like the look of the cut and the thick almost corduroy style they use for the bottom lining and cuffs. The Benitez has a strong almost retro vibe to it which makes me think of the hoodies I was wearing in the late 80’s, early 90’s.
Another plus to this hoodie is the fact that it is sherpa lined, meaning it is mega warm and snugly. If you live in a climate like Durban you may want to reconsider this particular style…coz you may spontaneously combust. However those of us living down here in Cape Town know just how chilly it can get, this hoodie will definitely save your life when you step out of the surf.
Well I guess we may have to wait a bit longer to get a better feel for surfer hoodies in 2010, but I’m sure we will find out soon enough…I will keep you informed.
D.
