Greetings movie fans.
Yep the Oscars are on the way and the choices for each individual section have been debated over in every way possible. Of course it’s not over until the fat lady sings when it comes to the Oscars.
I myself am much more interested in the 2010 Saturn Awards which is an awards show that brings together the best in the world of sc-fi, fantasy and horror, which are without doubt my absolute 3 favourite genre.
Every year the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror films, gives its nominations for its very own best of the best. While these guys don’t handle the usual Oscar grabbing volley of dramatic tear-jerkers, they make up for the industry cliché of constant “drama winners” by giving us an awards show that is all about subculture genres. The 2010 Saturn Awards promises to be even bigger this year!
The winners of the Saturn Awards will only be announced on the 24th of June. So we have lots of time to mill over the nominees and their chances. If I heard anything I will certainly keep you informed!

2. Where the Wild Things Are.
3. Watchmen.
4. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

BEST HORROR MOVIE

2. Frozen. (my choice)
3. Drag Me to Hell.
4. The Last House on the Left.
5. The Twilight Saga: New Moon. (not sure why this is even listed here)
6. The Box.
BEST ACTION, ADVENTURE or THRILLER MOVIE
1. The Messenger.
2. Sherlock Holmes.
3. Law Abiding Citizen.
4. Inglourious Basterds. (my choice)
5. Brothers.
6. The Hurt Locker.
While I may be a little negative when it comes to the Oscars and all its hype, this year seems to be a rather interesting selection of sci-fi/fantasy related movies. It’s amazing that Avatar as well as District 9 have both been nominated for Best Picture. WoW, when was the last time two films of this particular genre ended up facing off against the biggest motion pictures of the year? Could this be the beginning of a new trend?
Heck, even Inglourious Basterds is in with a chance for Best Picture at the Oscars! It looks like the 2010 Saturn Awards may very well have quite a bit in common with the Academy Awards this time around J
The Saturn Awards are always a great indicator of what is rock n rolling in my favourite movie genres. I always feel that a good movie is passed up purely because the content is “out there” or does not prescribe to the norm. I say normality sucks, why can’t sci-fi movies have just as much meaning and ‘oomf’ as a dreary true story rehash? Well, as I mentioned earlier those days may very well be over…my fingers are crossed of course.
Can fantasy gold become a reality? Let’s hope so.
D.
