Kick-Ass

Kick Ass Movie

Hi there all you superhero junkies.

So tell me are you all as sick of the constant bombardment of super hero movies of recent years that just have absolutely nothing going for them? While there have been a few gems like The Dark Knight and Watchmen, there are still those that make me want to vomit blood, such as Spiderman 3 and X-men 3…those were extra special bad with a side order of crapola! However there is one super hero movie that I am really looking forward to and that is the much anticipated flick Kick-Ass.

Kick-Ass is a superhero origin movie that centres around Dave Lizewski (played by Aaron Johnson) who is your typical high school kid who isn’t exactly a geek or jock. You could say that Dave is in some kind of social limbo, neither here nor there. Like his wishy-washy position in high school life so too are his accomplishments in life. Honestly he isn’t really good at anything but has a strong imagination that he applies almost completely to comics…well, of course girls as well!

The action starts when young Dave asks himself the question of why can’t he become a vigilante crime fighting superhero and kicks the hell out of ruthless criminals such as crime boss Frank D’Amico who is played by Mark Strong? New York City is a place filled with malevolent evil and Dave wants to do anything to become a saviour like the ones he reads about in his comics. So inevitably he dons a costume and even gives himself a superhero name, Kick-Ass.
Dave managed to pull off one small act of heroism which is captured on video and suddenly the whole city is talking about him. However he discovers that the life of crime fighting isn’t like in the movie and he gets the stitches to prove it!

This is the first step in the evolution of Kick-Ass and he then ventures into a shady are in order to protect the girl he digs at school from some bad dudes that have been making life hard for her. This is when Kick-Ass meets other “real” superhero types who are way more SERIOUS about their jobs and are willing to do anything to defeat criminals, which includes killing.

Matthew Vaughn is the director of this rather ambitious superhero origins movie and I must say from the response online so far that we may just have a really good movie on our hands.
What I love about this movie is that they try and throw in a gritty hard-lined approach to the normal superhero genre by making it more “real”. Of course it won’t be entirely, it’s still a movie, but maybe it will be a bit more hardcore than your typical “you know he’s gonna winhero.

Kick-Ass started in American cinemas on 16th April, but it will be hitting South African movie houses on the 23rd April…which I suppose isn’t really that long to wait…come on Friday J
