Ello ello!
You may ask the question: Why does Springleap.com have set theme competitions these days?
Well I suppose there is a whole host of reasons, but for now it seems this trend is here to stay…or is it? With the popularity of the Battle of the Best and our most recent competition What you got?, we have to wonder how much longer the day of the theme will last.
Perhaps this is a fine line we tread! Personally I enjoy the theme competitions. It focuses the communities design power onto a single subject and also makes the comparison of voting that much more easier, because we all then know exactly what we are voting FOR!
From that perspective yes the theme competition are much better. However do you feel that we are stunting the creative abilities of the average designer?
Check this out, not all of the designers that submit here are Speedy Gonzales artists. It takes them time to formulate a cool design concept and then put it down for submission. Yes we give our artist quite a bit of time and yes we do have extensions if a theme competition requires it for whatever reason. However maybe it’s less an issue of time and more an issue of association!
Think about it, if a theme competition doesn’t sit well with you and the concept doesn’t literally grab you by the ears and pull you in you may be likely to simply say, “Nah not my scene, I’ll wait for the next one”. Yes indeed this is quite a pickle we are presented with, are the theme competitions doing more harm than we think?
