FLAP Innovative design

FLAP

Greetings all

Innovation is a key factor in design when it comes to renewable energy in Africa. Saying this a few of the top designers of the eco industry have come together and graced the African continent with a innovative design that has me waiting with trepidation. The FLAP project short for Flexible Light And Power sees leading local designers from Portablelight , PopTech and Timbuk2 coming together and working on The Solar Satchel.

A device ‘completely off the grid’ this otherwise ordinary messenger satchel is powered by what looks like a five by thirty centre metre solar panel that is able to power a two watt bulb as well as a USB that can be used for charging a multitude of gadgets like radios and cell phones. With the project still in a ‘research’ phase in Ghana ,Kenya and Uganda alike you can keep up to date with Erik Hersman on apparent feasibility at @WhiteAfrican  or @AfriGadget. Just a quick note, Erik is one of the founders of AfriGadget and will play a vital role in the research team as he will be the ultimate ‘decider’ with regards to potential users.

I wish the team the best of luck and hopefully we’ll be seeing some awesome self powered back packs that’ll be commercially available.

Till next time

Alex

Design Innovation

Galileo

Howdy all

Today sees the world celebrating one of the greatest designs that has taken man on a journey of perpetual question, and what many say was the birth of Modern science itself. The designed instrument in question? Galileo’s telescope of course. Unfortunately the father of modern science cannot be credited with the first telescope design or creation for that matter but his design innovation and subtle tinkering of the original are what fuelled the imagination of academics, philosophers and religious zealots the world over.

Fashion under Fascism

Mussolini

Hello all

When anyone silently mouths ‘Italian fashion’ the giants of the couture fashion world spring to mind like a Lotus flower obeys the omnipotent Sun, Gucci and Prada are but a few of these epic wonders that run the multi Billion dollar fashion industry for the moment . But it seems that this prestigious Italian fashion culture has a somewhat tarnished history that is usually glossed over rather rapidly. A publication by Eugenia Paulicelli who is the Associate Professor of Italian and Comparative Literature for Queens College, New York has published a magnificent book that delves into the 1930’s Mussolini fascism and how it spilled over into the fashion industry.

Busted tees

Busted tees

 Greetings

One of my new favourite tee sites from now on has to be bustedtees. With such an awesome selection of political and pop culture inspired tees it‘s impossible not to be.  One that really caught my attention was the one pictured above featuring an 80’s Han Solo jamming on his awesome weapon of choice, entitled guitar solo. The site has been up and running since March 2004 and is run by the same guys that do the infamous site collegehumour.com. I haven’t linked the site because the humour featured is defiantly not pg13.

All designs were done by the guys themselves and the odd friend or two, but they are always interested in what the averages Joe like you and me have to say as well. With a guarantee that all there tees are made in the greater Los Angeles area and no sweat shops labour was solicited in the production they have my vote of awesomeness!! J The guys do a small range of hoodies to, with the same prints that they do for tees as well as some awesome posters that I would most defiantly like to get me fingers on.

Here is a few of the poster’s that I enjoyed hope you do too.
