Trucker caps

Hey guys

The origins of the trucker cap are inglorious to say the least, also known as a ‘gimmie’ cap or ‘feeder’ cap due to the nature of work the common wearer would do. It was frequently a promotional freebie (with a branding and logo’s on the foam) from farming supply companies to farmers and truckers alike. Not very long after the beginning of the new millennium the cap had become a fashion trend and was given the name Trucker cap.

The trend seems to be a bit of a paradox as most of the folks donning this trendy head gear are Suburban youth while the rural ‘blue collar’ average Joe who would use the cap for a more functional purpose would be of a slightly older demographic. Many claim that Ashton Kutcher was the biggest drive behind the styles popularity. Although an irritatingly arrogant Justin Timberlake claims in response to fashion Rocks magazine and I quote ‘that while Kutcher has been cited for originating its popularity, Timberlake had been wearing them since the age of seventeen.’ I bet he discovered America as well… Go Justin.

Today the caps come in varying colours and designs. Most come with some sort of design on the foam but there are the odd blank one’s floating around. I personally prefer the blanks, but Duncan has a few Iron Fist one’s that have awesome artwork on that I wouldn’t mind getting my grubby little paws on either. Hopefully Springleap can come out with a trucker cap range, I’m sure the local crew of designers would have a field day with a new medium. :)

P.S To all the metal heads in our community, the infamous Aussie band Parkway Drive, are touring and stopping off in Jozi for the Lucky Fish Music Festival that’s happening from the 3rd to the 6th of September. A must see for Lamb of God and In Flames fans.

Have a good one,

Alex

Innocentive

The world has a lot of problems…it’s not a pleasant thought, but it’s true.
However there are people out there we act for the greater good and selflessly give of their natural talents in order to make the world a better place.
When I was at the Design Indaba last week I was reminded that we find these types of people in just about every field.

Last night I learnt of a website called Innocentive that helps businesses such as academic institutions, non-profit organizations and public sector groups, take existing problems and utilize a global group of thinkers and problem solvers from all facets of life, in order to quickly and efficiently tackle a problem that would take much larger periods of time to otherwise crack, as well as cost more money.

Midnight Sale 22/07/2007He is not only one of my oldest friends in the world and an eSquared member, but Ronen Gordon is also the proud owner of one of eSquared Cape Town nieghbour stores,  SUPA CLEAN LAUNDROMAT.

At 26, Ronen has been the owner of Supa Clean Laundromat for 5 years, but this laundromat has been running for 7 years and is the longest running  business in it’s spot. Ronen is very proud of the friendly environment his staff create at Supa Clean, which in my opinion is rare.

Supa Clean Laundromat offers a very personal service. Hearing customers say that they love the Super, personal service when they collect their laundry makes Ronen very happy.

Supa Clean LaundromatUnlike most other laundromats, Supa Clean Laundromat, will glady take on any special requests when it comes to your laundry. So you get your delegat laundry washed, dried, pressed etc the way YOU want it done. And to answer a frequently asked question, YES, Supa Clean Laundromat DOES clean duvets.

Satisfied customers is Ronen’s favourite part of his job. I think that’s it remarkable how Ronen had grown an maintained his business. Some of his satisified customers other than his Very Important Paitrons include Guest Houses, Hotels, Restaurants and Hamilton’s Rugby and Football club… can you imagine what’s in those bags!

Ronen is in the process of expanding Supa Clean Laundromat with a new outlet for contract work only.

Dooby Scoo Toy Store

doobyscooHey there everybody.

If you live in Sea Point, well basically if you live anywhere in Cape Town, chances are you are familiar with the toy store called Dooby Scoo, owned by Allan, who is one of the most chilled dudes Ive met here in Sea Point.

This cool toy store has been a house hold name in Sea Point for 14 years and was one of the first shops up and running when the Odeon Building was constructed. The original owner actually made two shops into one and ever since they have been cramming in, the best, most loved, supa slick toys out there.

The Dooby Scoo toy store doesnt just stock the old classics, like the stuff that I was playing with when I was a youngster (Lego, Transformers, etc…), but they also have masks, puzzles, educational toys and all sorts of fun bits and bobs, to keep anybody entertained. Allan just wants to make the lives of children more fun and is always stoked to bring happiness into kids lives. Allan also reckons that just about everybody, from all walks of life and all ages, come in his toy store to check out his stuff….thats like a target market of ages 0 – 100+ (AWESOME)
