2010 Soccer World Cup

Official Fifa T-shirt

Morning Folks

Crazy times are ahead for football fans and designers alike here on the tip of Africa with the 2010 Soccer world cup just around the corner. For our leading local designers of today this upcoming event should be a golden opportunity to show case our talent and ingenuity to a whole new market of t-shirt consumers. Yes granted, not too much freedom of artistic design and expression when it comes to the average football tee, but I’m sure we will find new ways to broaden the so called horizon and make the most of this exciting event.

The official Fifa t-shirt for the 2010 soccer world cup to me isn’t the most beautiful of designs and I’m pretty sure our local designers given the opportunity could give the Fifa guys a run for their money. Of course Springleap could always come out with its own range of 2010 world cup apparel, socks and booties to match. HeHe. How’s about a weird and freaky football character to represent the design community of Cape Town? A mascot so to speak? Someone from the community could come up with some really crazy stuff that might, wait for it, look quite good on a tee. ;)

When we get down to the nitty gritty of what tourists will take away from South Africa as Lokololly brought up earlier hit the nail on the head, if there is no positivity and cohesion from the majority of ‘us’ there’s not a hope in hell of a foreigner walking away with that energy. So ultimately it’s us who make or break the world cup.

Thank god we at least qualify for first round when it comes to the football itself. ;)

In conclusion trepidation, excitement and a general sense of awe are the first thought that springleap to mind concerning the 2010 football. What do you expect from this international event? Do you really care? LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK

The Art World Cup!

Art and Fashion in South Africa are in for a crazy blow during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Adam Carnegie, a Cape Townian illustrator and designer has got to work with exactly this, and the environment, in mind. He has formed Kelp, the Kelp Environmental Learning Project. The project gives homeless people and volunteers alike the opportunity to become a part of making vuvuzela’s out of kelp. Here’s Adam blowing one of his hand-painted vuvuzela’s.

As far as fashion goes, the South African fashion industry will take a step into the limelight as tourists do the usual shopping thing! They’re all going to be going home to their friends saying “ OMG look what I got in South Africa, it’s so…” and we have the responsibility to fill the end of that sentence with positivity!!!

What is your opinion on what the World Cup will do for South Africa? Excited or Scared for the rush?

2010 World Cup Makaraba

Makaraba

The 2010 World Cup is right around the corner.
Nobody can deny the electricity in the air over this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Whether you are a supporter of the event, or a sceptic who fears the repercussions of South Africa hosting the 2010 Soccer World Cup, everybody seems eager for the event itself.

South Africa has been given a unique opportunity to show the world its beauty and diverse cultural heritage.
While tourists coming for the 2010 Soccer World Cup will primarily be coming for the epic football matches between the greatest teams on Earth, they will also dive into the best South Africa has to offer, such as Game parks, beaches, South African food and energy packed night life.

There is however one truly unique South African fashion trend that foreigners will be bombarded with when they arrive in SA.
The funky converted mine workers helmets, otherwise known as Makaraba, are big beautiful and guaranteed to make the internationals stop and stare.
We as South Africans are intimately aware of this football fashion must have, and by the end of the World Cup I have no doubts that THOUSANDS of Makaraba will be making their way back overseas with many protective tourists.

PSL ABSA Premiership Upsets

PSL

Soccer in South Africa is huge. Every year the sponsorships in the PSL get bigger and bigger and the skills of our local players become more finely tuned with every game.
I myself am not a super huge soccer fan and if I do watch footie it’s usually the overseas teams…not very patriotic of me I know. But that’s about to change.
Last night I was watching the news and stumbled upon an interesting story about the ABSA Premiership, that is, most of the dominant bigger teams have been destroyed by the “normally” smaller weaker teams.

What a surprise…and a pleasant one at that, I’m always an underdog supporter.
I hate it when the big well funded teams buy the best players and equipment, have the best facilities and basically walk all over the other teams.
When the “weaker” (weak no more) teams blast the big boys, who are too busy worrying if their hair is ok or if the cameras are pointed their way, I really have to smile.
