the beverly hills hotelWelcome to THE BEVERLY HILLS!

Situated right above the beach in Umhlanga, Durban – the Beverly Hills Hotel is one of the jewels of the Southern Sun Group’s crown. It holds a 5-star rating and sports MAGNIFICENT views of the ocean. It is pretty clean and quite pristine.

A FREAKING SHAME ABOUT THE COFFEE!!!

I come to the Beverly Hills to get away from the rigmarole of the day-to-day andmore often to work undisturbed in a pleasant environment. In the past I have cajoeled and complained. I have offered FREE ADVICE. I have even gotten behind the bar and shown them how it is done.

It always BLOWS MY MIND how the worst cappuccinos are always served at 5 star hotels that charge 5 star prices!!! And let me tell you that this is pretty consitant right throughout SA. They are a bunch of minging, penny pinching louts.

Yup! That’s how it is. The Beverly Spills Hostel charges a grand R21 per cappuccino. That is almost double what anyone else in Durban charges – even the winners of the Cappuccino competition charge about half that.

DON’T GIVE ME THAT “BUT IT’S A FIVE STAR HOTEL CRAP!!!”  - If it’s a 5 star hotel, shouldn’t the product be 5 star? The excuse is that this is a 5-star hotel because of the amazing location/situation. My buddy Fanie has a spot down the road and his view is the same and the coffee is free (and better).

The Grind : Coffee Critic

Hey Guys

I guess most people who know me know I am a bit of a coffee snob. Hey. It’s OK. It’s true.

I am a SELF PROFESSED COFFEE SNOB

BUT!!!  -with a difference

I actually know what I am taking about. If I know one thing – it’s a good cuppa… and best of all – I understand the science behind it and after 2 years of solid cappuccino-making – I can deliver the goods and just from a look across a crowded room, can tell you pretty much what is right/ wrong about a capo as the waiter carries it my way…

I have been trained by one of the best barristas from Italy and have spent many an hour pondering the right grind and the perfect froth.

It’s crunch time. I am going to deliver the goods : yeah. I am going to tell you who about THE GOOD, THE BAD and THE DAMN DOWNRIGHT UGLY of the coffee world wherever I travel from now on.

People will gnash their teeth. People will cry. People will HATE. Some will sigh.

It’s about time someone brought the brigands in the coffee industry to account. So here it comes Jimmy!!!

Welcome to the Chronicles of THE GRIND : COFFEE CRITIC.
